I had my old tunes on once I finished the install, and the truck ran very poorly and blew almost every high pressure oil o-ring on the truck. Now, I have many modifications to my truck which include: H2E turbo, electric regulated fuel system, Stealth high pressure oil pump, and stage two injectors from Swamps Diesel. The advantage to this is you can get the most horsepower out of the engine. So each tune is written for each individual truck depending on what modifications you have.
There tunes are not generic, they write their own tunes via a computer program. Both of these tuners have been known for their custom tunes for the 7.3 Powerstroke. The two best tuners for the 7.3 are Tony Wildman (94-97 Powerstrokes) and DP Tuner (99-03 Powerstrokes). So, with these numbers, the types of tunes can clearly make a huge difference. I then purchased some custom tunes from Tony Wildman and my truck then made 123 extra horsepower with less exhaust gas temperatures. When my truck was stock, I used a superchips programmer and had the truck on the dyno and it added about 70 extra horsepower with an exhaust and intake. These tunes have been known to roast transmissions and create high exhaust gas temperatures with minimal gains. These tunes are okay for the person that does not care about making measureable power. There are many generic tuners out there such as: Edge, Banks, Hypertech and Superchips. There is a really easy way to make good power with your 7.3 Powerstroke and that is through tuning.
